Schools are usurping the role of your family doctor by diagnosing your child with ADHD or ADD. They are then telling you that you need to give the child add medication before they can come back to school. Many parents agree and go to their doctors to demand the ADD Medication. It isn't given the attention needed to make sure that treating ADD / ADHD with medication is the right path for you or your child.
ADHD is normally diagnosed by the school when the child's behavior is constantly distracting the teacher and the class. The teacher will be frustrated by having to deal with this child every day. The teacher has tried everything she can think of to help the child and sees ADD medication as the only option now. Unfortunately the teacher didn't know of the many techniques available to help an ADD or ADHD Child. It is the parent's responsibility to make sure the teacher is informed of ways to help their child.
Is ADD / ADHD that bad? Being a daydreamer or someone who blurts out of turn could be exactly the skills that the child will need later in life. ADD medication takes a lot of those variablities of exploration of attitude that happens throughout life. Learning to control behavior is very important but being on ADD Medication because the teacher is boring to the child should not be an option.
