More and more doctors are wondering if too many girls are taking add medication and too many boys on adhd medication. There are 5 to 7% of children suffering with ADD or ADHD and 4.4% of adults. These are the numbers in Canada and similar ratios are seen in every country.
ADD medications given before other, safer treatments are given a chance to work is what is of great concern. Not enough patient education is what the doctors are saying. People need to be better educated in how to teach, work with or live with someone who has ADHD. There are many ways to handle those suffering with ADHD or ADD but medication should not be the first option.
The doctors are beginning to exersice more caution in prescribing add or adhd medication. They are seeing that this is not the best long term option for their patient. The patient needs time the doctor doesn't have to give. The pressures on a medical doctor to see a lot of patients each day is huge. So more doctors are looking for specialists to handle education and treatment that does not require ADD Medication.
