More doctors are becoming aware that many of today's ADD / ADHD sufferers need more then just to manage the symptoms with medication. Medical doctors and psychologists are endorsing new techniques like, biofeedback, social skills, language deficit training and group therapy.
There are proven results and scores of medical research papers indicating add medication alone can be effective for managing symptoms in the near term. Once the add medication wears off then all the add and adhd symptoms return. By using a combination of therapies, like neurofeedback, the add / adhd symptoms will eventually be reduced or resolved. In those cases the medication is no longer needed because the behavior is resolved when not taking the add or adhd medication.
The main problem with the combination therapies is that not enough doctors have the time or the clinic space to handle the intensive sessions. Medical offices are setup for checkups, physicals, consultations and prescribing medications. They are not normally setup to handle group therapy, neurofeedback or social skills therapy sessions. ADD medication is simple, effective and may help the child and parents quickly. The combination therapies require more time and effort and may take many weeks before changes are seen.
In the end the best treatment must be practised as often as possible. That is to use ADD medication in combination with other therapies until the patient no longer requires ADD medication to function without symptoms.
